New Pension Board Member

May 24, 2018

Introducing Joanna Carson

Joanna is the newest member to join the SPP Board. We asked Joanna about her past experience and what she looks forward to in her new role on the Pension Board.

QUESTION: What experience do you bring to the SPP Board?

JOANNA: I’m a professional accountant and a finance director with two decades’ progressive experience working at Canada’s leading research universities, including the last five years at the University of British Columbia. A few years ago, I went back to school and earned an MBA from Queen’s University. My day job is managing multimillion-dollar budgets, navigating challenges and seizing opportunities – helping the units I work with achieve their goals.

But pension plan governance is about more than just numbers. It’s a personal commitment. I’m a pension plan member too. And although my retirement is a ways away, I have a personal stake in the Plan’s success, over the long-term. I’ll be contributing to decisions that impact plan members today and well into the future.

QUESTION: What are you looking forward to in your role on the SPP Board?

JOANNA: I’m really looking forward to taking a deep dive into how the Plan is managed, and playing an active role in the oversight and governance of the Plan. Putting on my
accountant hat, I of course find the compliance piece interesting – ensuring our regulatory responsibilities are met and conserving and enhancing our pension fund assets.
